Capital Steps

I saw the Capital Steps on Saturday, at Sanders Theater. It was a lot of fun. First, I'd never been inside Memorial Hall before. It wasn't what I expected -- there's a lot more wood paneling and latin inscriptions than I had expected. The theater was very charming; the seats are laid out in semi-circles instead of rows, so it feels like you're in Parliament.

The Capital Steps were great. I'd never seen them before, so I didn't really know what to expect. A big part of their humor is the songs they sing. There were quite a few times where a song only became really funny once you recognized the chorus. Like "401(k)" set to the tune of "YMCA". Some of the satire was about subjects that just make me too upset to be able to enjoy the humor, like the (lack of) justification for invading Iraq. But some of it was really hilarious. They had a "lirty dies" piece about Iraq, which had me laughing so hard my throat hurt (lirty dies are what they call monologues filled with spoonerisms). The image of Bush going into Iraq with "buns glazing" will be difficult to get out of my head for a while.

Bah! Memorial Hall becomes less charming the longer you sit there. Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful theatre. But that said, the hard wooden benches are the "excuse" that students consistently turn to for skipping boring lectures.
