I just found out that I work with the author of this Op-Ed in the Boston Globe. Although the piece was addressed to the public at large, I don't feel it would be appropriate for me to respond to it directly, because I work with him. Instead, I'll just point to this rebuttal in the Boston Phoenix.

The problem with this debate, such as it were, is that anyone who's interested in it already has a solidly formed opinion. I don't believe anybody's going to restructure their entire moral system based on what is essentially a flamewar.
It disappoints me that the quality of argumentation is so lousy in both of these referenced articles. :(
